The Cape (not Cape Town)

Thurs 28/9 was the fIrst day of our (dreaded) coach tour part of our tour. We are however very happy with the luxury and amenity of the bus. Apparently it is a special bus for celebrities and other important people. Leather padded seats and only 17 people on a bus seating about 40 people.  Roomy.

This is the day we are 'discovering the breathtaking Peninsula' on a full day tour. The scenery is amazing as we take the 'scenic routes long  Chapmans Peak drive to Cape Point,  where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. The scenery is spectacular with wild seas pounding  rugged coastlines.

We take lots of photos of the coastline and then we reach the cape of good hope. Even more beautiful scenery. You could see why the cape was notorious for shipwrecks.

our first ostriches

One of the lookouts is a lighthouse which is pretty high up.and is kind of the original lighthouse. It is extremely high up requiring a funicular (I love a good funicular and will never forget the one in Bergen, Norway or the damned closed furnicular in Pistoia Italy,)

This one however only goes part of the way and the rest is by foot up the worst stairs I have ever seen. Paul thinks we did 100 steps. It felt more like 1000. The steps were stone and different heights, some really steep ones. Once at the top however the view of 360 degrees was amazing.  Ocean seemingly all around

And then there were the baboons,  quite a few scrambling over the lighthouse and hoping for morsels of food from the tourists.  We had been warned not to feed them or have food with us which might attract them.  But still they came at one point running around nearly knocking people over..

we continued on our way to Boulder where a colony of penguins decided to live. no one knows why they came or even why they stay but they have been there for years and have become a real tourist thing.

this might be where we had lunch

I have decided that in addition to the Big 5 we are meant to look for , I am going to seek and document the 'alternate 5'  ie squirrel, penguin, baboon, ostrich  and   ? (we will find out..)

Dinner was at an African themed restaurant in the Malay district of Cape Town with African drumming, a traditional meal and then entertainment.  It was all colourful, alive and fantastic.

not sure if this video will work but I have added it anyway.
Back to the hotel for our last night in Cape Town.
