On safari proper

wed 4/10
Our first day of safari-ing. It means getting up at 5 for a 5.30 am start to our game drive to spot the Big Five.

Last night we got 4 out of the 5 unbelievably i.e. Lion, leopard, elephant and rhino. Today we just need the water buffalo to get the five.

Hard to know why these are the big five but something about the difficulty in spotting them and in earlier unenlightened days, to shoot them.
We see:

evening

Once back at about 9, we race to the one available toilet and then have a sumptuous breakfast. We can then amuse ourselves until the evening drive at 4. Due to the hot weather, the morning drive is slightly earlier then usual and the evening one later.

There is also a 3 course lunch in between. We also have a swim in the surprisingly refreshing pool (bloody cold) and amuse ourselves including trying to use the Internet which is only available in Reception or napping.  There is also the thrill of the outside shower. Most thrilling in the dark with no glasses when one steps on something soft and slightly slimy in the shower. Daytime much better.

Prior to the evening drive, there is also a high tea of iced coffee, cake and little quiche like things.
Food, food, glorious and plentiful food.

We realized quite early on our first couple of drives that the quality of our photos depends of course on us but also the camera. We have a serious case of zoom-envy, me mostly.  I thought our phones are pretty good with an 8 times for me and Pauls may be slightly better but there are people on our tour with 40 and even 60 times.  Anyway they can see and photograph things we cannot.  They promise to share their photos.

Hippos at night where we have our evening sunset supper.
